Fever (Adult and Children): 3 Non -Drugs Alternatives to Treat Fever

Fever is technically any body temperature above the normal oral measurement of 98.6° F (37° C). According to MedicineNet, fever is part of the body's defense against infections. Although fever can be a good thing, a high fever itself can be considered dangerous. High fevers, usually a body temperature over 108°F (42° C) can cause brain damage.

Fever can be reduced by taking ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Nuprin), acetaminophen (Tylenol and others) or paracetamol (Panadol). But instead of drugs, there's a step to reduce a fever using natural home remedies.

1. Blady grass root to reduce fever

Blady grass, known as lalang in Malaysia and cogongrass (USA) or its scientific name, Imperata Cylindrica is said can relieve fever. It is a species of grass that grow fast and wild in the open. It spreads through small seeds, which are easily carried by the wind. To cure fever, dig out a handful of grass root and wash. The roots and be dried and stored for future use. Combine the grass root with an approximately four glasses of water into a boiling pot. Once at the boiling point, reduce heat and simmer until only 2 glasses of water remains. Drink like a tea while it is warm 3 times a day. Add rock sugar or honey if you prefer a sweeter taste.

My mom used to have me drink this 'cogongrass tea' whenever I got fever when I was little. She didn't mix with any sweeteners and the taste sucks! Though it's bitter to the taste but it works wonderfully. Everytime.

Use grated old coconut as a scrub. Gently rub the grated old coconut all over your body. This method often use on children who suspected to have measles.Coconut oil is easily absorbed by the body, all the heat went to the grated coconut and can help reduce fever. It makes the rash come out well too. Old folks don't use to give medicines to a child who get measles because they are afraid the rash does not come out well.

3. Use damp clothes

  1. I'm one of the rare people who doesn't whip out a bottle of pills whenever one of my kids has a fever. Mine aren't prone to extreme fevers, so I just kind of let them be when they have a fever. I think it serves a purpose in the healing process. If they are too uncomfortable, I might have them take a cool shower or a bath, but otherwise I just try to encourage them to sleep a lot and kind of incubate with their fever. Usually they get over their illness pretty quickly.
