Weight Loss Commitment: 5 Signs You're Afraid of Commitment

Commitment refer to a promise to do something, or to give something. Making commitment means dedicating yourself to someone or to a cause. Making a true commitment to weight loss and health means making a lifelong decision to eating well and regular physical activity, stay devoted to what you want and stand strong no matter what the obstacle.

To be honest, after had my baby boy 4 years ago I am still struggling to lose weight. I just update a quick recap of my weight loss journey here. It's frustrating to see how far I still have to go. I feel unsettling. I take time for self-reflection and come to a conclusion that I want to lose weight and get healthy but the fear of commitment is ruining my weight loss goal.

Weight Loss Commitment: Why are you afraid to commit?

The reason can be summed in one sentence. You don’t want change...because change requires some stretching out of our comfort zones.

Do anyone feel like I do? You don’t want a new change in your routine because you’re afraid you may not like the change. Or you're afraid of failing.

What if I don't meet my weight loss or fitness goal? I will be a laughing stock in front of my peers, family or relatives.

But instead of confronting the real fear of change, you look for a million reasons to justify why you should stay away from commitment. And without realizing it, you'd start looking for excuses just to rationalize your action.

5 signs you’re afraid of commitment

#1 One life. Just real food.
No more burger? Chocolate? Does the thought of a complete abstinence from junk foods scare you? Losing weight or to get healthy is a lifestyle change. While diet is all about numbers on the scale, number of calories you eat and burn, healthy lifestyle is about lining up your eating and physical activity with your real goals and desires. Once you adapt to healthy lifestyle, dealing with junk food is not an issue anymore.

#2. Fear of failure
Fear of failure affects lots of people. It closely related to fear of criticism or rejection. Fear of failure can stop us from achieving our goals. We are only human. We do make mistakes sometimes. The way to handle is by being aware of that mistakes, face it and sees it as necessary for learning experience. Failing is not a crime; it is just a stepping stone to achieve our dreams.

#3. There's so much you want to achieve.
I used to set a huge goals like losing 10kg in 1 month. Haha! I know, I am not the only want who probably always want to see result ---fast! Human beings, by nature, are lazy, ambitious, and impatient. Setting unrealistic goals might leave us feeling overwhelmed and depressed. Focus on one baby step at a time. For example, cut out soda from your diet.

#4. You’re perfect just the way you are.
Great excuse. You’re happy with your weight and everything's just dandy. So why would you want to lose weight to conform to the rules of society? Good point there. But instead of looking at losing weight as unnecessary rules set by the society, try to see it as a healthy commitment you're making to yourself. Determine how much you should weigh for your height. Remember that your personal ideal weight will also depend on whether you are a man or a woman, and whether you have a light, medium or heavy-set body frame. Aim for healthy weight.

#5 Healthy foods are expensive
It seems cheaper to eat a burger, fries, and a soda from KFC than to eat a meal of whole foods. Many people think this is true. But healthy food may not be as expensive as it's often made out to be. You just need to be clever about it.

  • Buy what’s local and in season.
  • Make meat go further in casseroles or stir-fries by mixing it with cheaper healthy alternatives such as beans, pulses and frozen veg.
  • Cook batches of dishes such as chilli, curry or stew, and freeze them in handy sizes. Then you will have a cheap healthy meal that will last and last.
The fear of weight loss commitment may seem genuine, but it's almost always just an excuse because you don't like change in your life.
